26 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

The Gallery at The North Wall

The Gallery at The North Wall is host to a succession of inspiring and varied exhibitions. Professional artists and groups including The Society of Wood Engravers choose it as a venue to showcase their work. Several times a year pupils from St Edward’s display their artwork in the Gallery where it can be enjoyed both by members of the school community and the general public. Here two pupils reflect on this experience.

Clementine German, Upper Sixth I don’t know many other schools which can offer you the opportunity to have your work exhibited in a public art gallery. Walking through the doors of The North Wall and seeing everyone’s pieces up on the walls brought a huge sense of pride and joy. I was able to reflect on and appreciate all of the hard work and commitment to the subject and the variety of media and techniques that people use. Seeing my own work on display was such an amazing experience, especially knowing that so many professional artists have hung their work in the same venue. I loved being able to select my favourite pieces and choosing how to display them. It’s very exciting knowing that anyone can come in off the street and see your work. The North Wall Gallery is such an inspirational space which can be accessed by pupils at any time. We are lucky to have regular exhibitions taking place, including those featuring work produced by our own teachers. Earlier this year Miss Holder put on show her art on the theme of sunset and sunrise, ranging from paintings to pencil drawings. It was so lovely to take the time to appreciate her talent and to see what she had been working on behind the scenes when she wasn’t teaching.
