44 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE

Alex Waring What do you do at Teddies and how long have you been here? I am the Housemaster of Oakthorpe. I also teach Biology and coach Hockey. This is my fourth year at Teddies. Tell us a bit about your education and career so far. I studied Physiotherapy at the University of Birmingham. When I realised that wasn’t for me I did my PGCE and have taught in schools in Bournemouth and Surrey. What made you want to be a Housemaster? I have always been interested in the pastoral side of education. The holistic role of a Housemaster also means you can a have a tangible effect on the most important years of a pupil’s time at school which is quite unique. What have been the highlights of your first term as Housemaster? The House events have been amazing – the People’s Chase, House Hockey and the end of term dinner. Oakthorpe is renowned for its house spirit. Being able to watch The Crucible was a real highlight as there were four Oakthorpe girls in the cast. How have Teddies Houses coped with the pandemic and the restrictions? Very well all things being considered! The food shopping bill has increased and it’s been fun thinking of ways to bring the House together. Bake Off and Taskmaster challenges have been very successful What do you hope Oakthorpe girls take away from Teddies? Knowing they have been part of a nurturing, kind and tight- knit community. To know they have embraced and enjoyed all the opportunities that Oakthorpe and the School offer. What do you see as the benefits of co-education?  There are huge benefits – it provides a more realistic environment for life after school. It helps to break down stereotypes, and girls and boys can learn a great deal from each other. I also believe it is very progressive to have co-ed boarding houses, and mixed House and Tutor teams. Did you enjoy your schooldays? I loved my schooldays! Saturday sport fixtures were a real highlight, there is a very competitive circuit of schools in Bath. Naughtiest thing you did at school? I know I was pretty annoying in the lower school - setting off the fire alarm when playing corridor cricket didn’t go down well! What are you looking forward to this year?  Hopefully sports fixtures starting up again. I am also excited about the House Singing competition; Oakthorpe has a formidable reputation so I feel somewhat under pressure!
