52 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
Ed Ellis What do you do at Teddies and how long have you been here? I have been at Teddies for eight years now. I initially started as a part time hockey and cricket coach. I've now been Head of Hockey and Cricket for three years and from September I will be Assistant Director of Sport. Tell us about your own sporting history. Growing up I was very happy to give all sports a go; I was lucky to go to a school which played a wide range. I still play both hockey and cricket regularly and golf casually. I grew up playing for Winchester Hockey Club and won two national titles with my old college, Peter Symonds. Currently, I captain Oxford Hawks 1st XI, who compete in the National League. I first joined the club when I started at Oxford Brookes, so I have played for 11 seasons now. In cricket, I play for St Cross CC in the Southern Premier League, but I have previously played for Oxford MCCU, Hampshire’s 2nd XI, and Dorset as a wicket-keeper batter. I enjoy being able to play at a competitive level whilst the body still allows. What inspired you to teach sport? I have played hockey and cricket from a very young age – my whole family played hockey which got me into it. Both sports are a big part of my life and I have so many fond memories of playing over the years. I volunteered at my local clubs as a coach whilst at school and discovered it was something I really enjoyed doing. Zak Jones, former Head of Hockey here at Teddies, and now GB Head Coach, was a huge inspiration. He taught me to stay calm, be positive but honest and value everyone equally. What do you enjoy about working at St Edward’s? There are many things I enjoy about working at St Edward’s, but the standout for me is the people and the pupils. I feel incredibly lucky to be part of such a passionate and dedicated sporting community, surrounded by like-minded individuals who share a real love for sport. The School’s location and facilities are also a big highlight; spending my summer days in the Martyrs Pavilion overlooking Upper 1 is something truly special. And, of course, I can’t answer this question without Teddies sport is having a period of great momentum; the last couple of years have been hugely successful on and off the pitch. I’m excited to continue to build on this, expanding the showcase games in both sports. Following the success of the Sri Lankan cricket tour this year, I can’t wait to head to Argentina with the girls’ hockey team. Do you listen to music in the gym? If so, can you recommend a good workout soundtrack? My go-to song to listen to whilst I run is Send Me On My Way by Rusted Root. What are three things you can’t live without? Sky Sports, Walkers Sensations Thai sweet chilli crisps and coffee. Which book do you think everyone should read? I’d highly recommend The Culture Code: The Secret of Highly Successful Groups by Daniel Coyle. It really opened my eyes to what makes a great team tick. mentioning the food - it’s certainly a daily highlight. What are the highlights on the horizon for sport at Teddies?
