31 ST EDWARD’S CHRONICLE
It would take a long time for the school community to get over these losses in the war and deciding how best to commemorate them proved as great a challenge as in the first war. Various projects were considered but a combination of a shortage of funds, planning delays and changes of mind meant that the eventual War Memorial Library (now known as the Memorial Building and housing the Common Room) was not completed until 1954, when it was opened by Henry Kendall, in his final term, at Gaudy with the following words:
In honour of their sacrifice, in the certainty that their memory is safe in your keeping, and I am thinking not only of you who are here now, but the students who will fill your places in the years to come.
