YouthLab: Camera Club presents Old Spires New Dreams

Leiden Sq, The Westgate Centre, Oxford. 10 - 24 May.

“Time flies over us but leaves its shadow behind.” Nathanial Hawthorne Oxford is a city known for prestige, knowledge and architecture, yet it is also rich in diversity, heart, and soul. Some things about the city don’t change: the cobbles, statues and colleges outlive us all. Their presence hangs heavily in the air, reminding us of what was before. But the people are changing the time. By capturing the beauty we see today, we hope to inspire new perspectives on the streets that now belong to us. Inspired by the streets, we worked with Elina Medley to develop skills in photography, image making and curation. This exhibition captures the contrasting beauty of Oxford, both urban and rural, and explores viewpoints of a new generation living in an old city. Kaleidoscopic greens, whispering winds and ghostly encounters influence each image.

We hope you enjoy our exhibition, Camera Club ‘2024.

A special thanks to Landsec at The Wesgate Centre, City of Oxford College, St Edward’s School, Oxfordshire Arts Weeks and The Oxford Festival of the Arts.

The Photographers

Alice I love the sea, scuba diving and sharks. I have always loved to take photos on my phone, so learning how to use a DSLR camera was really fun and Camera Club has been an amazing experience for me. It has taught me to be creative and to have confidence in my ideas. Django In my spare time, I like to game online with friends and I enjoy BMXing in my local skatepark. This Camera Club has really benefitted my understanding of photography and has reignited my passion for photpgraphy. Emelia I am currently studying A-Level photography and hoping to pursue Media at university. I enjoy reading poetry, running, videography and candid street photography. Camera Club has aided me with the relevant skills to curate an exhibition and work alongside like-minded individuals.

Kate I like to play the flute because I enjoy learning pieces in order to compose songs, I enjoy doing this as it is calming and exciting at the same time. In my leisure time, I enjoy taking portraits and painting. Camera Club has taught me to be creative and to take pictures of everything! Kam I love to express my emotions and feelings through the artistic medium of photography. I love history, nature and gaming. I also presented my work in another exhibition in Cutteslowe Park two years ago. Lyla I like to showcase vivid colours and patterns in my photography, such as in flowers and butterflies. In my spare time I am either cycling, reading, or playing musical instruments. I often travel to North Devon and love the beauty of the coast; capturing the sealife and Mali I really enjoyed walking around both urban and natural landscapes capturing photographs of plants, specifically flowers because I like all the bright colours and their shapes. I really enjoyed Camera Club as I was able to build on my camera knowledge and learn cool techniques.

Finbar I love to cook, I love watching wildlife, I also love photography and riding my bike. This is the first time I have exhibited my work but hope it’s not the last.
